Questions people ask me

Chiropractor or osteopath — which should I see?

The short answer

Both are regulated healthcare professionals who assess and treat back, neck, joint and muscle pain, and the two overlap a lot. Which suits you better usually comes down to the style of treatment you find helpful and the person you feel comfortable with, more than the profession.

Both are regulated in the same way

In the UK, "chiropractor" and "osteopath" are protected titles. Chiropractors must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council, and osteopaths with the General Osteopathic Council. Both train for four or five years at degree level, carry insurance, and follow a code of practice set by their regulator.

You can check anyone on their council's register before you book. I'm GCC No. 05268.

Where the two differ, broadly

Chiropractic care tends to focus more on the spine and joints, and often uses quick, precise joint adjustments alongside advice and exercise. That's how I work: hands-on treatment paired with a plan for getting you back to normal activity.

Osteopathy tends to use more soft tissue work, stretching and slower joint mobilisation, and describes itself as a whole-body approach. In practice there's plenty of crossover. Many chiropractors use soft tissue work, and many osteopaths use joint manipulation.

Practical differences that might matter to you

  • Style: if you like the feel of a quick joint adjustment, chiropractic care tends to offer more of that. If you'd rather have mostly massage-style and stretching work, osteopathy tends to lean that way. Either way, tell your practitioner what you prefer.
  • Continuity: with me, you see the same chiropractor at every appointment. In larger clinics of either profession you may see different people.
  • Cost and access: both are almost always private in the UK, at similar prices. Some health insurance covers both, usually with a GP referral.

How I'd choose

Pick a registered practitioner whose approach makes sense to you, who explains what they think is going on, and who gives you a clear plan rather than open-ended treatment. If I assess you and think someone else would help more, whether that's an osteopath, a physio or your GP, I'll tell you.
