What happens at your first chiropractic appointment?
The short version
Your first appointment is 60 minutes and costs £70. I'll take a full history, examine how you move, and explain what I think is going on in plain English. Many patients receive some treatment at this first visit too, plus a clear plan for what comes next.
Step 1: history
I'll ask how your problem started, what makes it better or worse, and about your general health, not just the area that's bothering you. This is also how I screen for anything that isn't suitable for chiropractic treatment, so I can point you elsewhere if needed.
Step 2: examination
I'll examine how the area moves, test the relevant nerves and muscles, and often check neighbouring areas too, since problems in one place are often connected to another. For example, hip and mid-back movement often plays a part in back pain, and shoulder blade position often plays a part in neck pain.
Step 3: explanation
You'll leave knowing what I think the problem is, in plain English, not jargon. If a scan or a GP referral is genuinely needed, I'll say so and explain why.
Step 4: treatment and a plan
Where it's appropriate, I'll begin treatment at the first visit. You'll also get a realistic idea of what to expect going forward, including rough timescale, and I'll teach you more about what's going on to help you understand your own pain rather than just treating the symptom in isolation.
What to wear and bring
Wear something you can move comfortably in. I may need to see or work on the area I'm treating, but you'll never be asked to undress beyond what's necessary, and you're welcome to bring someone with you. If you've had any relevant scans or letters from other clinicians, bring those along too.
